Poster Session 8
Course Design and Participant Evaluation of a

Psychoeducation Group on Cognitive Behavioral

Therapy for Depression

Presenter:

Ann Koranda, M.S., CNS, LADC, CGP

Currently many inpatient psychiatric treatment programs offer didactic and  interactive psychoeducational therapy groups in addition to experiential group psychotherapy.  Some treatment models have incorporated cognitive behavioral principles to help clarify health beliefs and understanding of psychiatric illnesses. Brown (1998)  LaSalva  (2002) and Ridner (2000) say that if the focus of  psychoeducational groups is to promote learning and change then the facilitator of the educational process should have knowledge of learning theories, teaching strategies, behavioral change models and group dynamics (task and process issues), and leadership skills. This poster describes the theoretical models used for content and delivery design of an inpatient group for depression. Antidotal data from patient feedback on the group is also shared.
