The Pair
and the Person: A Group-Analytic Approach to Problems of Intimacy
Chair:
John
Schlapobersky, BA, MSc., Mem. Inst. G.A., Training Group
Analyst, London Institute of Group Analysis & Group Analytic
Practice, Society for Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, London,
England
Open to participants with more than
ten years of group psychotherapy experience
Group analysis and
object-relations theory together give a coherent approach to
relational problems, allowing combined use of individual, marital
and group therapy. We explore the theory, use it with role-play in
assessment and apply it to conjoint, four-way and couples group
therapy.

1. Attendees will be able to approach the needs of couples in
trouble with an assessment profile that is both integrated and
comprehensive.
2. The assessment profile will allow them to make choices about
therapeutic responses and modalities based on the needs of the
couple or presenting client, rather than on the customary basis of
the therapist’s preferred options.
3. Attendees will e able to use the conjoint method for the
assessment of couples in trouble and, where appropriate, apply this
to long-term therapy.
4. Attendees will have a sound clinical framework for the
composition, selection, maintenance and evaluation of couples group
therapy.
