Psychotherapy Meets Neuroscience-Demonstration Group of Body Oriented Group Psychotherapy

Chairs:

David Fogel M.D., CGP, Private Practice, Bethesda, Maryland
Ilana Bar-Levav M.D., CGP, Private Practice, Bethesda, Maryland

How can group psychotherapy “sculpt” new neural pathways between the thinking, feeling, sensation, and motor parts of our brain? Fishbowl demonstration of body oriented group psychotherapy followed by a practical discussion of what worked, what didn’t, and how we currently understand the convergence between psychotherapeutic and neurobiological theory and fact.

Learning Objectives:

The attendee will be able to:

1. Identify how group therapy can access cortical, limbic, and brainstem regions of the brain in the service of facilitating optimal neural network integration.
2. Define the growing convergence between psychotherapeutic theory and neuroscientific discovery.
3. Critique what constitutes effective psychotherapy through the use of in vivo demonstrations combined with didactic teaching.
